Our Farm...
Polgreen Lakes Fish Farm is set in a 40 acre site and is made up of 11 beautifully landscaped rearing lakes and ponds totalling 8 acres. All lakes are individully fed from natural springs sited on our land, meaning we have full control on the water supply and its quality. The water is of such a high standard, we use the same source for our home! We have a modern aeration system on the farm to maintain optimum oxygen levels throughout the year and a constant through flow of water to dilute any bad effects caused by fish waste and uneaten feed etc. All our out-water is cleansed via a large reed bed before going out to sea. The Fish Farm is just half a mile from the Atlantic Ocean on the North Coast of Cornwall. The mild coastal climate and above average autumn and winter temperatures mean we have a longer growing season ensuring optimum growth rates and premium year round conditioning as a result. Polgreen Farm is sited in the Lanherne and Menahyl river valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty with a wealth of wildlife from otters and mink to gulls, cormorants, herons and kingfishers. It is our job to ensure that our fish stocks can continue to prosper in this environment whilst not impacting on the local wildlife. Predator and disease prevention are our focus and our lakes are stock fenced, electric fenced and top lined to protect our fish from threat. We have a close working relationship with both the Defra department of Cefas and the EA. Strict Government legislation and yearly Cefas farm inspections ensure that we are up to date with all biosecurity measures. Our biosecurity action plan is central to the farm's success. It has been developed in consulation with Cefas to ensure that we operate the fish farm in the best way possible. We are very lucky to be able to farm our fish in such surroundings, we love it. If you would like to organise a site visit to see us then please don't hesitate to get in touch. Please note that we only accept visitors by prior arrangement due to our strict biosecurity process. As an established and landscaped fish farm we have cultivated many water and marginal plants on site. From beautiful yellow flag iris and norfolk reed to bulrush reed mace and subsurface oxygenators. If you are developing or creating a pond or lake these plants should be an essential part of your design and execution. They encourage insect life, offer a haven for fish when avoiding predators, act as spawning beds and nurseries, they behave as water cleansers and they are key to bank stabilisation and erosion prevention. We supply these plants and recommend getting in touch to discuss your requirements.
